Increasing Demand and Accessibility to Female Condoms in Mozambique

Since 2011, Pathfinder has been advocating for wider use and acceptance of the female condom to female populations in Mozambique.

The female condom was introduced into Mozambique’s public health system in 2008. As of 2011, only 45% of women and 78% of men reported knowing about this method of contraception (DHS 2011).

Through funding from Oxfam Novib and the Female Health Company, Pathfinder has been able to train more than 70 “activists” to give knowledgeable, relatable demonstrations on the use of the female condom to sexually active women throughout the country. These activists contribute to an enabling social and programmatic environment that is conducive to an increase in the demand and accessibility to and use of female condoms. The project focuses in five provinces of Mozambique: Maputo City, Maputo Province, Inhambane, Gaza, and Nampula.
